Plant Powered Wellness: How Herbs Can Help Improve Your Health
Lisa Kilgour, NutritionistSeptember 11, 2018
Plant-based foods such as fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds, and beans are super chocked-full of nutrients and come with a load of gut bacteria-friendly prebiotic fibre.
But, one superpower of plants we don’t always talk about is their medicinal prowess. Is there anything plants can’t do?
Plants and herbs have been used as medicine throughout most of human history, we’re talkin’ thousands of years. They’re used to help us support our body and to aid in healing.
Generation to generation, we’ve passed along this important info down the line and we benefit from this knowledge today through beautiful herbal blends made by talented herbalists.
We can extract and concentrate the medicinal benefits of herbs into tinctures and ferments. Medicinal components like the curcumin in turmeric and silymarin in milk thistle. These single medicinal ingredients work best inside the whole herb, so we want to concentrate all of it…the traditional way.
Herbs work synergistically together and can be more powerful in a blend then on their own. Trained herbalists know exactly which herbs play nicely together and I look to herbal blends whenever my body needs some extra support.
Let’s look at how some herbs and herbal blends can help with common health issues
Adrenal Fatigue
Are you feeling mega tired, craving lots of salty foods, and feel like your pep and drive have gone missing? If so, you may be dealing with Adrenal Fatigue.
Our adrenal glands produce our stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, and these hormones are in charge of our everyday energy and our stress response. If you’ve been feeling extra stressed for a long time then your adrenal glands may be getting a bit tired and your wake-up hormone cortisol might be waning.
Daily Adrenal Support Liquid Capsules are a beautiful blend of Rhodiola, Ashwagandha, and Holy Basil that support your adrenals and your stress response. My favourite herb in this blend is wild oat milky seed, which helps to relax my fried nerves.
Hypothyroid (low thyroid)
Our thyroid is our relaxing/rejuvenating control centre, which is getting pummelled our high-stress world. It’s happiest when you’re relaxing on the couch while reading a book (or doing anything that relaxes you).
Many of us that are dealing with a low or tired thyroid are feeling sluggish, cold, and are dealing with a very slow metabolism (usually causing weight gain).
Your thyroid and adrenals are buddies and they use the same protein to make their hormones, so thyroid and adrenal problems frequently happen hand in hand.
Ashwagandha Liquid Capsules are fantastic thyroid helpers. Ashwagandha is a wonderfully balanced adaptogenic herb (helps your body adapt to stress) and can stimulate your thyroid while also supporting your adrenals.
Liver Support
Our liver is a consummate survivor. It takes a beating each day, from the pollution in the air to the chemical & pesticide residue in our food. It deals with it all and keeps our cells healthy and happy.
Sometimes our liver asks for support. Subtle signs that your liver could use some help are symptoms like; PMS, chemical/scent sensitivities, and headaches.
Your liver doesn’t need a heavy duty cleanse or an overly restrictive diet, but it does like it when we clean things up a bit. Reducing refined and processed food, alcohol, and caffeine while upping our cruciferous veggie intake is very liver-friendly.
Milk thistle is a potent liver-friendly herb. It supports our natural liver detox cycle while helping our liver heal from damage. Be gentle with this herb, it’s very powerful!
A great and gentle way of adding milk thistle to your diet is with the Daily Detox Shot. It’s a fermented tea of milk thistle that can be enjoyed every day.
If you need something a little stronger, Milk Thistle Liquid Capsules are a concentrated form of milk thistle. Start off slowly with this one, and it can be a great choice if your liver could use a big helping hand.
Plants and herbs are amazing tools for our wellness when used correctly. Don’t hesitate to check with a Herbalist or Naturopathic Doctor if you’d like to find the right herbs for you. Or, stick with the fermented shots – they’re safe and effective for even the most sensitive systems!
