Turmeric Root – Turmeric has a long and rich history of use in Ayurvedic medicine. It has long been used to help relieve pain and inflammation and many modern studies have confirmed its efficacy (1). A meta-analysis of eight randomized clinical trials supports the efficacy of turmeric extract in the treatment of arthritis (2). More specifically, it was shown to reduce pain and inflammation due to arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis. Much of turmeric’s medicinal benefits have been attributed to one key constituent called curcumin. Curcumin has proven its excellent ability to act as an anti-inflammatory as well as a wonderful antioxidant. However, curcumin is a compound that is difficult to absorb, which limits its efficacy when taken on its own. Research is now looking at many other compounds in turmeric that also provide health benefits and that improve the absorption of curcumin (3),(4). Taking the whole root, with all of its constituents, is proving to be the better way to go and is Botanica’s preferred approach.

Devil’s Claw – Devil’s Claw is a desert plant that is found mainly in southern Africa and got its name due to its peculiar claw-like hooks that cover its fruit. It has a long history of use among the natives of the Kalahari desert, they would chop it up and use it for a number of ailments involving pain and indigestion. It is a valuable herb to consider for pain and inflammation in the joints. In a systematic review of the literature on Devil’s Claw, it was shown to have strong evidence in favour of using it in the treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic non-specific low-back pain (5), and a number of scientific studies have demonstrated its worth in releaving the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis, especially if it involves the knee or hip (6).
