Sober Curious: An Introduction to Mindful Drinking

Lisa Kilgour, Nutritionist

Grab a cup of your favourite tea and settle in because we’re about to dive into the fascinating world of the sober curious lifestyle. You might be wondering, “What on earth is sober curious?” Let’s take a look at this emerging and mindfulness-based trend.

Is it just me or does it feel like alcohol seems to be built into our culture? We use it to celebrate, to socialize, and as a tool to relax at the end of the day. But, turning to alcohol regularly often has negative consequences, like lowering mood, and many people are waking up and making a conscious decision to look at the role that alcohol plays in their life.

The sober curious lifestyle is about developing a more mindful relationship with alcohol, it’s not about saying goodbye to the booze or making drastic changes overnight. Instead, it’s about taking a step back, reflecting on our choices, and making conscious decisions about how alcohol fits into our lives.

Now, you might be wondering, “What’s in it for me? Why should I even consider this sober curious mindset?” Well, there are plenty of benefits to embracing this lifestyle.

The benefits of a sober curious lifestyle

First and foremost, it can have a positive impact on your health. Let’s face it, regular alcohol consumption can take a toll on our bodies. Regular alcohol use can lead to a deficiency in B vitamins, dehydration, and digestive issues.

And often, being sober curious isn’t about full sobriety, instead it’s about being mindful and choosing in the moment if having an alcoholic beverage is what feels best, instead of just going along with the crowd. By adopting mindful drinking practices, we can reduce the risks associated with alcohol-related health issues and take better care of ourselves.

One of my favourite aspects of being sober curious is the increased self-awareness it brings. When we step back from the drinking routine, we become more attuned to our bodies, emotions, and overall well-being. It’s like hitting the refresh button and giving ourselves a well-deserved break from the boozy rollercoaster. Plus, you might find yourself waking up with a clear head, enjoying better sleep, and feeling more mentally sharp. Who doesn’t want that, right?

Starting your sober curious journey

Now, let’s dive into how you can start exploring the sober curious lifestyle and make more conscious choices when it comes to alcohol. Here are a few practical tips to help you get started:

Starting your sober curious journey

  1. Take a moment for self-reflection: Pause and reflect on your current drinking habits. Ask yourself why you reach for that glass of wine or that bottle of beer. Understanding your motivations and triggers can help you make more conscious choices when it comes to alcohol.
  2. Set intentions for your drinking experience: Before taking a sip, set an intention for your drink. It could be as simple as savoring the taste, engaging in meaningful conversations, or enjoying the moment. By consciously setting intentions, you become an active participant in your drinking choices and can appreciate the experience on a deeper level.
  3. Embrace alcohol-free alternatives: Just because you’re exploring the sober curious lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice enjoyment. There are plenty of alcohol-free alternatives out there that can tickle your taste buds and keep your spirits high. Mocktails, herbal teas, and sparkling water with a splash of fruit juice can be delightful companions on your journey.

But what about those social settings or events where the pressure to drink is high? I’ve got some tips to help you navigate those sticky situations:

  1. Communicate your intentions: Let your friends and loved ones know about your sober curious journey. When they understand and support your choices, it becomes easier to navigate social gatherings without feeling pressured to drink. Plus, you might inspire others to join you on this path of mindful drinking!
  2. Sip and savour: Be the master of your drink! Instead of mindlessly chugging away, savor each sip. Pay attention to the flavors, the aromas, and the sensations dancing on your palate. By sipping slowly and mindfully, you can fully enjoy the drink without feeling the need to constantly reach for another. I find a glass of water or mocktail between cocktails helps me stay the master of my drink.
  3. Seek connection beyond alcohol: Engage in meaningful conversations, explore activities, and bond with others in ways that don’t revolve solely around alcohol. Social connections can be enhanced by shared experiences and genuine connections, whether or not alcohol is involved.
